Today many artists begin their careers by performing on national televised competitions such as X Factor, The Voice, or even American Idol. Tim Halperin has had an act for singing since he was a young boy. He began writing songs in High School and shortly after that he himself entered one of the most popular singing competitions in the nation, “American Idol”. He was featured on Season 10, but failed to make the final cut. This did not stop him from chasing his dream of becoming a musical superstar. American Idol opened up many doors for his career, and has helped him pursue music as a full time career.
Tim Halperin is from Fort Worth, Texas but currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee. He has connected and touched so many people with his music. One of his biggest fans was the late “Kidd Kraddick” who was a national syndicated radio host/DJ from Dallas. He was also a mentor and great friend of Tim’s.
Read on for an exclusive interview with Tim Halperin, where he discloses about the passing of Kidd and what his plans for the future will be!
Taylor: When I say Kidd Kraddick what’s the first word that comes to mind?
Tim: Kidd was an incredible friend and mentor to me. I learned so much from him about music, creativity, laughter, giving, and the list goes on. I don’t think there is one word that is big enough to describe his impact on me.
Taylor: The loss of Kidd was so sudden, how did it effect you? and what are you doing to honor him?
Tim: The loss of Kidd was indeed sudden. It was a shock at first. Initially there was so much mayhem with the response from so many people who paid tribute to him and wanted to connect with people like his daughter Caroline, the staff at KKITM and people Kidd connected with like me. After the initial shock died down, I was left with the sadness of losing a dear friend that I couldn’t hang out with anymore, but also left with the incredible gratitude for having been a close friend to Kidd, and a desire to carry on his legacy of Kidd’s Kids. In doing so, my new CD will be dedicated to Kidd and we have a special announcement regarding that on January 14th.
Taylor: What inspires you to write your music?
Tim: It’s a cheesy response, but life inspires my music. Moments of revelation, sadness, joy, relationships. Basically if something is meaningful to me, I want to share it in my music. I don’t ever want to just write a song to write a song. That’s why my new CD ‘Heart Tells Your Head’ is so meaningful to me, and I hope the same for those who listen to it.
Taylor: Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Tim: Well there is a collaboration on the new CD that I will announce shortly, but there are SO MANY artists that I would love to collaborate with. My list includes Chris Martin of Coldplay, Ben Folds, Ed Sheeran, Paul McCartney, Sara Bareilles, and so many more.
Taylor: It looks like your doing some touring, are you going to be doing a full tour soon?
Tim: That is indeed the hope. My booking agent and I are talking about putting something together, and I really hope it happens. I love hitting the road and meeting new people/playing my music for people.
Taylor: When did your life change in regards to music?
Tim: I have played music my whole life and I started writing songs in high school. My life changed when I was a part of American Idol, Season 10. That opportunity opened the door to do music full-time and I haven’t looked back since. I am very thankful for Idol and the doors that being a part of it opened.
Taylor: What has been the best venue you have played at?
Tim: That’s a tough question. Some of my favorite places that we’ve played include the Verizon Theater in Grand Prairie, Texas, the House of Blues in New Orleans and Dallas and the Slowdown in Omaha, Nebraska. Another sentimental favorite is the Aardvark in Fort Worth, Texas. That is where I cut my teeth on performing, and we continue to play there.
Taylor: Which song have you written that has had a very strong meaning to you?
Tim: Every song means a lot to me, but one in particular that is on the new record is ‘Dear Sophie’. It’s a lullaby I wrote for my niece, and enough people who heard it live commented on how they wanted it, so I decided to record it for the new record. You can get an acoustic version of it on iTunes now.
Taylor: If you could have all the money in the world what would you do with it?
Tim: I’d like to think I would be responsible with it, but I’d probably be an idiot and spend it on stupid stuff. If I spent it ideally, there are a lot of worthy causes that I would support. I have always been an advocate for the fight against cancer, as well as Kidd Kraddick’s Foundation, Kidd’s Kids. I would also like to see more money given to the clean water initiative in Africa and around the world in many Third World Countries.
Taylor: Where do you see yourself in the upcoming years?
Tim: I love being a songwriter. If it’s in the Lord’s Will, I would like to continue writing, recording and playing my music. Connecting with people is equally important to me. My hope is that my music would connect with people. Obviously it’d be nice to have a couple songs do really well and tour a bunch as well.
Taylor: Do you support any kind of charity?
Tim: Yes, I do. I think it’s important to give back with your passions, and I have been fortunate to work with several charities and foundations. I have done work with Kidd’s Kids and Komen for the Cure.
Taylor: What do you like to do when you are not singing?
Tim: I’m really into coffee. Usually you can find me at a coffee shop somewhere. Lately I have gotten into watching TV Shows on Netflix like ‘Friday Night Lights’, ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘House of Cards’ and a couple others. Sometimes I’ll go on jogs, but lately I have been very inconsistent with working out. My guilty pleasure is Playstation 3. I’m big into FIFA.
Taylor: Favorite TV show?
Tim: Probably ‘Friday Night Lights’
Taylor: Favorite Food?
Tim: I. Eat. Everything. But probably spaghetti or steak for a favorite.
Taylor: One word that you would use to describe yourself
